The Student Work and Internship for Tourism (SWIFT) Program, launched by the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), is an initiative designed to offer high school students firsthand work experience within the tourism and hospitality industry. This two-week inaugural iteration saw 17 young interns successfully complete placements with esteemed member companies, including Dagron Tours, Ramada Georgetown Princess Hotel, Wanderlust Adventures, Herdmanston Lodge, Caribbean Inn, Grand Coastal Hotel, and Maggie’s Catering Inc.
Through SWIFT, THAG aims to bridge the gap between education and industry, helping students explore tourism and hospitality as a viable, exciting career path. By offering placements during school breaks, SWIFT allows students to:
• Explore potential career paths within the industry,
• Develop relevant, hands-on skills that enhance their future employability,
• Build professional networks and gain insight into the dynamic world of tourism.
This initiative is also a response to the growing need for a workforce that is informed and passionate about tourism, creating a pipeline of future professionals equipped to contribute to and elevate Guyana’s tourism landscape.
The program welcomed students across various academic levels, including those in 4th, 5th, and pre-6th form. Interns were assigned roles tailored to their interests and strengths, working in diverse areas such as:
• Housekeeping
• Front Desk Operations
• Sales & Marketing
• Kitchen Assistant
• Communication Assistant
• Tourism Marketing
• Data Entry Clerk and more.
These roles provided students with exposure to the day-to-day operations and customer service aspects that are central to the tourism and hospitality industry. In their respective roles, interns not only contributed to business operations but also gained practical skills and a deeper appreciation of the industry’s value to Guyana.
Given the success of this initial iteration, THAG is committed to expanding the SWIFT Program to engage more students across Guyana. Future sessions will seek to involve additional member companies, offer a wider array of role placements, and potentially extend the duration of internships. Our goal is to establish SWIFT as a long-term program that continually cultivates young talent and fosters interest in tourism and hospitality, paving the way for a well-prepared, passionate workforce.
