As the first key advocacy action of the quarter, the Tourism & Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG’s) Executive Committee and Executive Director met with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) to discuss pressing industry concerns raised by our members. This meeting provided an opportunity to address challenges and advocate for solutions on behalf of the sector. In response, GRA agreed to engage directly with members at our Members Meeting, offering further insights and clarifications on key issues.
On January 30, THAG kicked off the year with its first Members Meeting & Networking Session at Cara Lodge Hotel. The event brought together industry professionals to discuss advocacy updates, new initiatives, and a review of 2024, while also providing a valuable platform for networking and collaboration. Attendees had the opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and explore potential partnerships.
Key presentations were delivered by Mr. Shaun McGrath, Mrs. Carla Vantull (Executive Member & Head of THAG's Advocacy Committee), representatives from the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), and Mr. Kamrul Baksh, Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA).
THAG welcomed its first two Volunteer Advisors of 2025 through our continued partnership with Catalyste+, aimed at strengthening both our membership and secretariat staff. As part of this initiative, members benefited from Business Plan Writing sessions to enhance their business plans.
Within the secretariat, a Digital Marketing Advisor provided valuable support to elevate marketing efforts. More Volunteer Advisors will join throughout the year to assist members in various areas of business development, based on their needs.
As part of THAG’s commitment to fostering youth involvement and education in the tourism industry, we have expanded our outreach beyond Tourism Awareness Month to a year-round initiative. This quarter, the THAG Team visited Linden’s Young and Thoughtful Youth Group and Freeburg Secondary School to engage students in discussions about the tourism and hospitality sector.
These sessions emphasized the diverse career opportunities within the industry and provided guidance on how students can get started. Additionally, we introduced our SWIFT program, offering a pathway for young individuals to gain practical experience and industry exposure.
A special thank you to THAG members Malcolm Rhodius of 592 Tours and Donella Long of The Balance for accompanying the secretariat staff and delivering insightful presentations.
The third edition of THAG Talks, in partnership with Recycle Organics, focused on Organic Waste Management in the Hospitality Industry. Moderated by HSEQ Committee Head, Paul Waldron, the session explored how businesses can implement composting and sustainability practices to improve efficiency and reduce their environmental impact.
Experts highlighted real-life success stories, including how hospitality facilities in the Caribbean have integrated composting into their operations.

THAG is proud to partner with the Centre for Local Business Development, along with the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), for ElevateALL: Tourism & Hospitality Edition, a business acceleration program designed to support the growth of local tourism and hospitality enterprises.
Running from February to May 2025, this initiative provides participants with expert-led workshops and professional mentoring to refine their business strategies and scale their operations. Phase 1: The Bootcamp recently launched with 25 dynamic tourism and hospitality businesses, including several THAG members. During this phase, participants mapped out their current strategies, envisioned future growth, and sharpened their business pitches for long-term success.
We look forward to seeing the continued progress of these entrepreneurs as they move through the program!
THAG’s Tour Operators recently had the opportunity to visit the newly opened Royal International Hotel, one of our newest members. This site visit provided an exclusive look at the hotel's modern facilities, elegant rooms, and upscale amenities.
We look forward to seeing the Royal International Hotel thrive as part of Guyana’s growing tourism landscape!
As part of the ongoing THAG/GTA Discover Essequibo Circuit Development Project funded by Compete Caribbean, a website is currently being developed by Bucketlist Adventures. This initiative seeks to showcase the area's diverse attractions and connect visitors with local service providers.
The Discover Essequibo project was launched to unlock the region’s tourism potential by enhancing product development, improving accessibility, and fostering sustainable tourism growth.
This upcoming website will serve as a comprehensive resource for visitors, showcasing local accommodations, tour operators, attractions, and unique experiences available in Essequibo. By increasing online visibility and accessibility, the platform will support both tourists and local businesses, further positioning Essequibo as a must-visit destination.

As the leading private sector voice of the tourism and hospitality sector, THAG remains committed to advocating for responsible and sustainable development that benefits communities, protects biodiversity, and ensures the longevity of Guyana’s natural assets.
This quarter, THAG took a firm stance against mining operations in Aranaputa, standing in solidarity with Visit Rupununi, local communities, and environmental advocates to oppose projects that threaten livelihoods, ecosystems, and Guyana’s sustainable tourism future. We have called for the immediate termination of the mining project, highlighting the lack of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) prior to its approval.
Sustainable tourism depends on the preservation of Guyana’s pristine landscapes, and we will continue to advocate for responsible policies that safeguard our country’s natural and cultural heritage. We commend the residents of Aranaputa and local leaders for their courage in raising awareness and remain committed to protecting Guyana’s ecosystem from harmful industrial activities.
THAG will continue to work alongside our partners and members to promote sustainable tourism growth while ensuring that development initiatives align with environmental conservation and community well-being.
